Steer clear of trouble - with help from the Council

Outreach teams work with young people
There’s always a choice….
That’s the message from the Council’s Active Engagement Outreach Team as it aims to steer young people away from anti-social activity across the borough.
The team provides support for young people in places where anti-social behaviour affects families and communities. It reaches out to young people at risk of becoming involved in anti-social or criminal behaviour.
It gives younger residents advice on keeping safe and tells them about the negative impact of anti-social behaviour on themselves, their families and neighbours. It also visits families and individuals affected by anti-social behaviour to provide reassurance and support.
Several nights a week, including Friday and Saturday, two AE teams work potential trouble spots to promote a range of exciting, positive activities taking place throughout the area. The service also operates a drop-in facility at the Beacon Building in College Street where young people can get advice and support.
Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods, Safer Communities & Youth, Councillor Sue Murphy said: “Many young people probably don’t realise what a great range of things are going on in their areas and some who act anti-socially may not even be aware of the impact their behavior is having towards others. There are some real alternatives on offer.
“St. Helens Council has worked with Merseyside Police, Helena Partnerships and other Crime and Disorder Reduction Partners to give young people in the Borough something fun and constructive to do throughout the Summer, providing a number of activities as part of the Safer St. Helens Campaign.
“Our Active Engagement Teams are already doing a great job diverting dozens of local youngsters away from potentially destructive, anti-social behaviour, but we’re keen to get the message across to every young person that there’s always a choice.”
The teams will be especially busy during the light nights of August, with a host of activities planned for local youngsters. They include:
